Susan Spencer
Senior Vice President, Content & Strategy
Susan joined Subject Matter after a long career in journalism, consulting and executive management. As a media executive, she was editor in chief of Woman’s Day and womansday.com, which she revitalized during her tenure by connecting deeply with its audience of 15+ million American women. The magazine was the top-selling monthly on U.S. newsstands from 2016 to 2019. The throughline of Susan’s career — and her passion — is storytelling that informs and inspires, gives value, and reflects purpose. She brings this perspective to Subject Matter, where she develops content and media strategy for clients that include the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, Women’s Heart Alliance, and Bedtime Math. Drawing on her years of experience advocating for women, she is spearheading a new thought leadership initiative at Subject Matter aimed at amplifying the voices, values and visibility of women executives. Susan is a proud volunteer who sits on the board of WomenHeart, a Washington, D.C. patient-centered nonprofit, She also serves on the American Heart Association’s Communications and Marketing Coordinating Committee and the Board Marketing Committee of Safe Horizon, the nation’s largest nonprofit victim services organization.
