SVP, Content & Strategy
Susan joined Subject Matter after a long career in journalism, consulting and executive management. As president of Susan Spencer Consulting, Susan drew on her deep experience in content and communications to help organizations connect authentically with American women. Her clients included a nonprofit initiative promoting women’s economic security, a global content marketing agency and a PR/communications firm in the health and wellness space. A longtime media executive, Susan was most recently editor in chief of Woman’s Day and womansday.com. During her eight-year tenure, she revitalized the magazine by connecting deeply with its audience of 15+ million and bringing it back to its roots as an inspirational source of information for American women. The magazine was the top-selling monthly on U.S. newsstands from 2016-2019. As a volunteer, Susan sits on the board of WomenHeart, a Washington, DC, patient-centered nonprofit that serves women with heart disease. She also serves on two board committees: the Communications & Marketing Coordinating Committee of the American Heart Association and the Marketing Committee of Safe Horizon, the nation’s largest nonprofit victim services organization. Closer to home, she is a proud volunteer at St. Joseph’s Food Pantry in Maplewood, New Jersey, and is a co-leader of Neighborhood Beacon, an initiative that supports small businesses and food-insecure families.
